Writing a stability study brief

An adult East Asian laboratory analyst inspecting a retained oral-pouch sample from a clear specimen tray next to a compact moisture analyzer on a clean workbench

A shelf-life proposal needs a study that identifies the formula, final packaging, conditions, methods and acceptance criteria.

Start with product identity

Record the formula version, ingredient specifications, pouch construction, retail pack and manufacturing stage. A study on a different extract, flavor or packaging configuration may not support the proposed product. State whether the samples are exploratory or representative of the commercial specification.

Define what will be measured

Choose endpoints relevant to quality and intended presentation, with methods suitable for the matrix. Examples to discuss include ingredient content, physical condition, sensory attributes and microbiological requirements. The exact list and limits are project decisions rather than a universal template.

Agree conditions and reporting

Specify the storage conditions, time points, number of units, test responsibilities and report format. Identify how deviations will be investigated. An accelerated observation should not be casually translated into a fixed shelf life without a justified rationale and an appropriate review.

Use the result in change control

The final shelf-life decision should name its supporting data and configuration. Define how later changes to ingredients, process or packaging will be assessed. Keep retained samples and revision history available to the responsible team. Do not print a shelf life before the agreed evidence supports it.

Put it in your brief

For each item, record the decision owner, the information needed and the approval that allows the next stage to proceed. Unresolved questions should remain visible in the project brief instead of being replaced by an assumed specification.

This guide supports business planning. Formula, safety, intended-use and destination-market decisions require project-specific review. No pouch efficacy, onset or product authorization is established here.
